Prevocational General Practice Placements Program

Further information

  • Placement length is 10-26 weeks. The duration will depend on the length of rotations in your hospital.
  • You are eligible if you have unconditional (general) registration in the PGY 2 or PGY 3 year.
  • Fully furnished accommodation and support for travel to and from your site is provided.
  • You remain an employee of the hospital (primary allocation centre) with the same terms and conditions of employment.
  • You are covered by your employing hospital's indemnity.

The Prevocational General Practice Placements Program (PGPPP) provides junior doctors with high-quality, supported training in a range of primary care settings.

The program is managed by the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) and funded by the federal Department of Health and Ageing. It is supported by the Postgraduate Medical Council of Western Australia.

The program provides junior doctors with practical experience across a range of medical and procedural disciplines in rural and remote settings. You will receive:

  • hands-on experience in general practice and procedural medicine and opportunities in emergency medicine, anaesthetics, surgery and obstetrics and gynaecology
  • direct care of patients from local communities with the opportunity for follow-up care
  • exposure to Aboriginal health issues
  • supervision and mentoring from experienced GP supervisors who are available at all times to provide advice, support and guidance
  • payment on a par with hospital training and fully-furnished accommodation
  • lifestyle balance and a chance to get away from the city to some of Western Australia's most scenic rural and remote areas.
