School of Primary, Aboriginal and Rural Health Care

Foundations of Clinical Practice, Year 2

In this unit, students develop skills in history-taking and clinical examination of the major body systems with a focus on normal presentations using peer examination and patient models.

This completes the process of clinical assessment started in Year 1, and provides a foundation for the Year 3 teaching of clinical assessment of patients with illness and disease. Teaching is integrated with the Normal Systems program to consolidate the students’ understanding of normal anatomy and physiology.

Students are able to practise these skills in the general practice setting with community general practice placements. They are encouraged to form an ongoing relationship with an infant and family to understand child development within the family unit.

Visits to older patients living independently and within residential care help to develop an understanding of the impact of chronic disease on the individual and society.
