School of Primary, Aboriginal and Rural Health Care

Foundations of Clinical Practice, Year 5

The unit involves an eight-week attachment to the School whereby students spend about half their time attached to a general practitioner in the community.

The focus of the unit is on problem solving and applying clinical skills in the community context. The content is based on common conditions seen in general practice, and a continuing problem-based learning strand of the unit IMED5501/IMED5502 Science and Practice of Medicine Part 1/Part 2.

The unit is combined with Ophthalmology, which comprises a skills workshop, PBL sessions and clinical sessions in Ophthalmology outpatient clinics. Small-group tutorials are held at the School focusing on consultation skills, with an emphasis on diagnosis and management.
